The Browns have made their first move to reshape their quarterback room . It involved the one healthy quarterback they had remaining on the roster.

Cleveland is acquiring Kenny Pickett from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for Dorian Thompson-Robinson and a fifth-round pick in this April's draft, a league source told the Beacon Journal. The fifth-round pick will be No. 165 overall, which they received from the Detroit Lions last November in the Za'Darius Smith trade.

The Browns , with Thompson-Robinson now in Philadelphia and Deshaun Watson recovering from a second Achilles surgery, will still be in search of another veteran quarterback to add to the roster and compete for the starting job. There's also the likelihood they'll add one through the draft, either at No. 2 overall or with a later pick.

Thompson-Robinson's only win in five career starts in Cleveland was against Pickett and the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 11 of the 2023 season. A rookie at the time, Thompson-Robinson led the Browns to a go-ahead field goal with less than 10 seconds remaining in a 13-10 victory in Cleveland.

Pickett, 26, was originally drafted by the Steelers with the 20th overall pick in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft out of the University of Pittsburgh. Despite a winning record (14-10) in 24 career starts for the Steelers, he quickly drew the ire of the fan base because of a lackluster overall offensive performance, blame for which was shared between Pickett and then-offensive coordinator Matt Canada.

As a rookie in 2023, Pickett took over for Mitchell Trubisky midway through a Week 4 loss to the New York Jets , then took the starting job the next week in a loss to the Buffalo Bills , finishing 7-5 as a starter that season. He started the first 13 games in 2023, with the Steelers going 7-5 in those games, before suffering an ankle injury in Week 13 against the Arizona Cardinals that required season-ending surgery.

A year ago, Pickett was traded with a 2024 fourth-round pick to the Eagles for a 2024 third-round pick and two 2025 seventh-round picks. He appeared in five regular-season games for the eventual Super Bowl winners, including a Week 17 start in place of an injured Jalen Hurts against the Dallas Cowboys in which he went 10-of-15 passing for 143 yards and a touchdown before leaving with a rib injury.

Pickett completed 25 of 42 passes for 291 yards with two touchdowns and an interception overall in 2024.

Thompson-Robinson's career has been just as star-crossed since the Browns selected him in the fifth round (140th overall) of the 2023 draft out of UCLA. He was thrusted into the backup role after a strong training camp as a rookie when Cleveland traded away Joshua Dobbs to the Cardinals, then was thrust into the starting job unceremoniously when Watson sustained a shoulder injury in Week 3.

The 25-year-old Thompson-Robinson was consistently yo-yo'd up and down the depth chart over his two seasons with the Browns as he struggled to adjust to the NFL game. After a disastrous debut in Week 4 of the 2023 season against the Baltimore Ravens , he lost the starting job to P.J. Walker for multiple games while Watson was out before getting it back when Watson suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 10 against the Ravens.

Thompson-Robinson only started two games — against Pittsburgh and in Week 12 at the Denver Broncos — before being knocked out of the loss to the Broncos with a concussion. He returned as Joe Flacco's backup, with a handful of plays mixed in, before sustaining a season-ending hip injury in Week 16 at the Houston Texans .

Last season, Thompson-Robinson appeared in seven games, but only started two: Week 16 at the Cincinnati Bengals and Week 17 against the Miami Dolphins . He threw for 440 yards — matching his yardage as a rookie — while completing 51.7% of his passes with no touchdowns and six interceptions last year.

Thompson-Robinson's career numbers in 15 career games are 880 yards on 52.6% passing (121 of 230) with one touchdown and 10 interceptions, while also being sacked 14 times and rushing 35 times for 187 yards.
