What is a Real ID?
A Real ID is a driver’s license or ID card that's federally accepted as a form of identification. Unlike typical IDs, they have a star in the upper-right hand corner.
Who needs a Real ID?
The federal government will soon require every person 18 years and older to present an
acceptable form of identification , such as a U.S. passport, or a Real ID-compliant state-issued driver’s license or ID card to fly domestically or enter secure federal buildings. Children under 18
are not required to provide identification when traveling with a companion within the U.S. The companion will need acceptable identification, however.
Do you need a Real ID to fly?
A valid passport or passport card is still required for international flights – a Real ID will not suffice.
How to get a Real ID
To get a Real ID, you need to gather the necessary documents and visit an Illinois DMV or Real ID Supercenter. The Supercenter is a walk-in only, non-appointment facility located at 191 N. Clark St. in downtown Chicago, open Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Some DMVs require appointments. Check the Illinois SOS website to find
your nearest DMV and
schedule an appointment if necessary.

The cost of a REAL ID driver’s license or ID card is the same as the traditional license or ID card, and the process to get one is similar.
