CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS) — No. 3 Charleston Catholic used strong performances in the first and final periods to top No. 6 Logan and kick off the West Virginia Girls Basketball Tournament on Tuesday.

The Irish beat the Wildcats 45-35 to win the first Class AA quarterfinal matchup.

Charleston Catholic got off to a hot start in the first half, shooting 40% from the field and 57% from three-point range while holding Logan to 22% and 0%. The second half was a different story, however, as the Wildcats went on a 10-2 run in the third period to regain a narrow lead.

The teams traded punches down the stretch until the Irish pulled away in the final frame, outscoring Logan 15-6.

Charleston Catholic’s Mary Rushworth led all scorers with 13 points. Molly Messer added 12 points while Nora Aliff pitched in seven points and 10 rebounds for the Irish.

Payton Butcher scored 12 points to lead Logan. Bam Mosby added 10 points.

Charleston Catholic will move on to play the winner of No. 2 St. Marys and No. 7 Ritchie County in a semifinal matchup on Thursday at 11:15 a.m.
