Anthony Wissmiller has been charged with two counts of felony criminal vehicular operation.



ALEXANDRIA — An Iowa man faces felony charges after a crash near the intersection of Interstate 94 and Highway 29 South in Alexandria.

Anthony Lynn Wissmiller, 69, of Dubuque, has been charged with two counts of felony criminal vehicular operation in Douglas County District Court.

According to the statement of probable cause in the case, a deputy was dispatched to the site of the crash on March 1 at approximately 7:58 p.m.

Upon his arrival, the deputy observed a cargo van lodged against a bridge barrier, along with a Buick Enclave, the statement read.

The deputy spoke with the driver of the cargo van, who stated he was traveling south on Highway 29 and had a green light, the statement read.

The other driver stated the Enclave turned left in front of him in an attempt to enter the Interstate, the statement read.

A witness to the crash told law enforcement that the driver of the Enclave, later identified as Wissmiller, fled the scene on foot, the statement read.

Both the driver and a passenger of the other vehicle were injured and transported from the scene of the crash to Alomere Health, the statement read.

A deputy was dispatched to the scene to find Wissmiller, which he did at Days Inn, approximately 300 yards away, the statement read.

The deputy noted that Wissmiller was unsteady on his feet, his eyes were bloodshot and watery, and he had the odor of alcohol on his breath, the statement read.

Wissmiller was then transported to Douglas County Jail, where he ultimately agreed to a blood test after being served with a warrant, the statement read.

On March 4, Wissmiller was charged with being a fugitive from justice from another state.

Following his booking into the Douglas County Jail, authorities confirmed the existence of an active out-of-state warrant, the statement of probable cause in this case read.

Iowa authorities have explicitly confirmed their intent to initiate extradition proceedings to secure Wissmiller's return to their jurisdiction to address a probation violation, the statement read.
