The Tony Award nominations are out and offer some surprises.

June 9 marks the 73rd annual Tony Awards, the celebration and recognition of excellent performances and talent in live Broadway productions for the 2018-2019 season. The ceremony is held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and will be hosted by James Corden, himself a 2012 Tony Award winner and host of the ceremonies in 2016.

This year's nominations were released the morning of April 30 and brought with them a surge of excitement and surprises. Some big acting names made the list while others felt left out in the cold.

There are a few notable highlights from Tuesday’s announcement, the biggest surprise being 14 nominations for the new musical "Hadestown", a post-apocalyptic folk musical based on the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. The story of rescue, love, and a trip to the underworld scored the most nominations for any production this year, with "Ain’t Too Proud-The Life of the Temptations", a jukebox musical, following with 12. Both are up for the Best Musical category, along with "Beetlejuice", "The Prom", and "Tootsie".

The Tony Awards will be a night to remember, a celebration of glamour and grace, spotlighting the talent, creativity, and hard work that goes into these productions. A mix of iconic talent and new ideas, the awards celebrate the theatre, giving a global spotlight to the stage, to the music, and to all those who make up its magic.
