W hile there is no doubting Patrick Mahomes will be the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs next season and for many seasons to come, that hasn't stopped them from bolstering their depth behind him.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Chiefs are signing former New England Patriots and Cleveland Browns quarterback Bailey Zappe to a one-year contract.

The 25-year-old was drafted by the Patriots in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Western Kentucky.

Despite signing a four-year, $4.3 million contract with New England, the AFC East side waived Zappe in the second year of that deal.

From there he jumped between the practice squad and the active roster before later being released. Zappe then signed with the Chiefs' practice squad, only for the Browns to sign him, waive him and then re-sign him to the active roster.

Zappe made one start for the Browns last season, completing 16 of 31 passes for 170 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.

Zappe set to compete for backup spot

Zappe is expected to compete with Gardner Minshew, who the Chiefs recently signed, for the backup spot in Kansas City.

The signing makes sense for the Chiefs as Zappe seemingly fits into coach Andy Reid's system . Zappe played in a similar system in Western Kentucky, passing for an FBS record 5,967 yards and 62 touchdowns during the 2021 season.

He also only threw 11 interceptions in 687 attempts, and his play helped Malachi Corley get drafted by the New York Jets in the third round.

Given Zappe's familiarity with the playbook in Kansas City, it only makes sense for the Chiefs to sign up and add some depth to the quarterback room.
