In a somber conclusion to a tragic situation, Margaret Elizabeth Lehman, 27, and Mark Edward Brittian Jr., 30, have been sentenced for their roles in the starvation death of their 11-month-old daughter, Marcelyn. The couple from Leesburg, Florida, received prison terms of approximately 13 years yesterday after a medical examiner found the infant had not eaten for about two to three days before being declared dead, reported FOX 35 Orlando . According to responding officers, the residence was in a dire state of neglect, with a strong odor of garbage and rotting food and an overall "deplorable" condition, as detailed by police records and an officer who described the scene upon entry said Orlando Sentinel . Marcelyn was found unresponsive in a dirty playpen, covered in dirt and dried feces, she was underweight and underdeveloped for her age, the surface of her home painted a grim portrait of the child's last days. Judge Cary F. Rada handed down the sentences, with Lehman getting 13 years and Brittian receiving 13.25 years in prison. Both defendants were charged with aggravated manslaughter, according to a release from the state attorney's office, and eventually pleaded no contest to the charges. Alongside the sentencing, State Attorney Bill Gladson made a pointed statement, "This is disgusting, the most vulnerable of our society has been victimized by the most evil. At least in prison, they'll both receive food, unlike their innocent child," as reported by WFLA .
