A raging seven-alarm fire engulfed a multi-story mattress warehouse on Monday evening in West Baltimore, with firefighters striving to contain it well into the following day. Smoke and flames were reported to Baltimore City Fire just before 7 p.m. near Edmondson Avenue and North Bentalou Street. WBAL-TV reported that the severity of the inferno escalated rapidly, prompting additional alarms at 7:22 p.m. and sequentially reaching the seventh by night's end. As the challenge of subduing the blaze persisted, residents near the fire's epicenter, specifically the 600 block of Bentalou Street, faced displacement. According to WMAR-2 News , temporary housing arrangements took form at a local hotel, coordinated by the Red Cross of the National Capital & Greater Chesapeake Region in collaboration with city partners. Over 200 firefighters are said to be combating the fire. The conflagration's impacts rippled through transportation systems, complicating commutes and travel. "We have had some water pressure issues in the area," Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace informed WBAL-TV . These issues also threw a wrench into firefighting efforts, with Wallace highlighting that "our fire flows have exceeded a lot of what the water grid has." This revelation signaled the magnitude of the blaze and the city's struggle to adapt its infrastructure to the crisis at hand. No injuries have been reported among multiple city agencies responding to the emergency. However, the fire's proximity to Amtrak tracks necessitated coordination to de-energize overhead lines, causing service disruptions between Wilmington and Washington, D.C., as per announcements by Amtrak Northeast. Commuters utilizing the MARC train on the Penn line faced cancellations this morning and were advised by the Maryland Transit Administration to consider the Camden line or other alternatives.
