Honda for the Win
To the untrained eye, the Honda Insight is almost indistinguishable from the Accord. And that's a really, really good thing because hybrids of old – including the old Insight – were always a little too eccentric in their styling. Even today, my heart sinks anytime I see somebody driving a 2019 Prius, not because I'm against reducing our carbon footprint, but because l think they could've done so much better. They could've got a new Insight, and they'd never have to shrug their shoulders and say "eh, it's good on gas."
But looks set aside, the Insight is sized somewhere between a Civic and an Accord, meaning it offers a lot more room than its competitors. Sure, it gets a few less MPGs but, in my opinion, is well worth the extra room. Speaking of MPGs, the Insight can propel you 55 MPG in the city and 49 MPG on the highway, so you can cruise the entire length of Colfax and back for about $2.70.
At 7.7 seconds to 60mph, the 151-horsepower Insight also hits 60 about three seconds faster than the Prius, which is a substantial difference. It's also quicker than that Mazda CX-5 crossover you were looking at, too. However, most people looking to sip fuel aren't really interested in speed, but it's always nice having a few more ponies for passing or driving in the mountains.
Now, for the figure everyone is waiting for: Price. Starting at $22,830, the Insight is well within reach of many new car buyers and, in proper Honda fashion, offers a lot in the way of interior build quality. Honda interiors have always been a nice place to be, but the Insight is even better. It feels solid, everything is easy to use, and it shares the same brilliant dash-screen as the Accord.
Clearly, Honda has invested a lot in this car, and it shows. The fact that it's a hybrid? Well, we can keep that secret between us. As for me, I might sneak up to Tyrrell Honda and bring one home.
