STATESBORO, Ga. (WTOC) - South Georgia Tormenta FC opened up not just their season but the entire USL League One season Friday night, as they hosted the Richmond Kickers. Owner Darin Van Tassell equated the feeling of opening night to that of a major holiday.

Richmond kickstarted the scoring in the 19th minute, but Tormenta was able to pull even on a penalty kick by midfielder Mason Tunbridge in the 24th minute. Ten minutes later, the Kickers extended their lead with another goal.

Tunbridge’s night was not done yet. He found the back of the net once again in the first minute of added time at the end of the first half to cut into Richmond’s lead and make it 3-2.

In the second half, Tormenta was held scoreless, while the Kickers tacked on one more goal to top Tormenta 4-2 in the season opener.

“We continue to keep working, keep growing,” said Tunbridge. “I think we put on exciting football at times, but excitement doesn’t win games, goals do and clean sheets do. We’ll go back to the drawing board and hit the ground running next week.”

Next up, the Ibis will host AV Alta FC on March 15 at 7 p.m.
